  1. a large British company that made cars, buses and lorries in the 1970s and 80s. It was formed in 1968 when several large companies including Austin, Morris, Rover and Jaguar combined, but continued to use the original names for the cars they produced. The company was losing money in the 1970s and was nationalized and then in the 1980s it was separated into smaller companies and sold to private owners.
