- a song used during the civil rights movement by African Americans and their supporters to show that they intended to overcome prejudice and segregation. Mahalia Jackson often sang it at their meetings. It was originally a gospel song, and includes the lines: “Deep in my heart, I do believeWe shall overcome some day.”
