- William Christopher Handy (1873-58) a US musician who is often called 'the father of the blues'. He wrote St Louis Blues (1914) but failed to sell it, so he began to collect and publish traditional blues music. His other songs included Memphis Blues (1912) and Beale Street Blues (1917). He also led a band (1903-21).
