Robert Stephenson

- (1803-59) an English engineer, the son of George Stephenson. He helped his father on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, for which he designed and built Rocket, before becoming the engineer on the London and Birmingham Railway. He also designed many important bridges and was a Conservative for the last 12 years of his life.
