  1. a strip of water that extends into the US state of Washington from the Pacific Ocean. Seattle is on its eastern shore. It has many islands and is connected to the Pacific by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. George Vancouver visited it in 1792 and named it after his assistant, Peter Puget.
