  1. Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-91) a US showman who was famous for his exaggerated claims. He owned a travelling circus, called the Greatest Show on Earth, and later joined his great rival J A Bailey to form Barnum and Bailey's Circus. His circus acts included Tom Thumb and the elephant Jumbo.
