  1. (1895-1960) a US writer of songs. He wrote the words for many famous Broadway musical plays, most of which were also made into films. With Richard Rodgers as his partner, his shows included Oklahoma!and The Sound of Music. Earlier successes included The Desert Song (1926) with Sigmund Romberg, Show Boat (1927) with Jerome Kern and Carmen Jones (1943).
