- one of the most popular and heavily advertised US brands of cigarette. It was first sold by the Philip Morris company in the 1920s as a woman's cigarette, and advertised as being as ‘Mild as May’. Advertisements showing the Marlboro Man as a cowboy began in 1954, often with the words ‘Come to Marlboro Country.’
