- (1883-1946) a senior US military officer during the Second World War. General Stilwell's popular name was 'Vinegar Joe'. He commanded US forces in China, Burma and India but was sent back to the US in 1944 because of disagreements with Chiang Kai-shek. He later commanded US forces on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
