- a US university in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2004, it had about 5 400 students. It was established in 1867 with money given by Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore businessman, and opened in 1876. He also gave $4.5 million for Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is part of the university's famous medical school, established in 1893.
