  1. (c. 1578-c. 1632) an English writer of plays. The best known of these are The White Devil (c. 1608) and The Duchess of Malfi (c. 1614), which are full of violence and strong emotions. Little is known about his life, but he is now considered to be one of the greatest Jacobean writers.
