  1. (1926-67) a US jazz musician who played the saxophone. He became well known in the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1950s and then formed his own group in 1960. He helped to develop 'free jazz'. One of his best recordings was Giant Steps (1959). He was chosen for the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1965.
