  1. a place in Cheshire, north-west England, where there are several large radio telescopes (= devices for receiving radio waves from objects in the universe). The main one was designed by Sir Bernard Lovell (1913-2012), and when it began operating in 1957 it was the largest of its kind in the world. Jodrell Bank is part of the University of Manchester.
