Word Originmid 18th cent.: from Italian, literally ‘influence’, from medieval Latin influentia ‘inflow’, from Latin influere, from in- ‘into’ + fluere ‘to flow’. The Italian word also has the sense ‘an outbreak of an epidemic’, hence ‘epidemic’.
