  1. Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) an English author known especially as a writer of early science fiction novels. These include The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898). He also wrote successful comic novels about life in Britain, including Kipps (1905) and The History of Mr Polly (1910). Wells believed strongly in the importance of science and the need for social change and world peace.
