  1. (1904-61) an English singer and comedy actor from Lancashire. He began his career in music hall and later made many successful films. He always played a slightly silly character with a strong northern accent and a big smile, and sang songs with sexual double meanings while playing the ukulele, an instrument like a small guitar.
