- Frank Raymond Leavis (1895-1978) an English literary critic. He taught at Cambridge University from 1936 to 1962 and started the magazine Scrutiny (1932-53). In his books New Bearings on English Poetry (1932) and The Great Tradition (1948) he helped to establish modern ideas on the work of such writers as Gerard Manley Hopkins, T S Eliot, Henry James and D H Lawrence.
