- the largest city in the US state of Michigan. It began in 1701 as a French trading post. It is on the Detroit River and connected by a bridge to Windsor, Canada. Detroit is the centre of the US car industry and often has many unemployed workers because of the increase in imports of foreign cars. It also has a music industry and produces salt from local mines, steel and chemicals.
