- (1935-94) an English writer of television plays, many of them broadcast in several parts. He is well known for his dramatic stories about relationships, often set in the recent past, in which the characters often sing popular songs of the period. He is considered one of the most important television writers of his time. His best-known plays include Pennies from Heaven (1978), The Singing Detective (1986) and Lipstick on Your Collar (1993).
