  1. (1884-1946) a US author and sports journalist. He is known for his humorous short stories about unusual and colourful New York characters, including criminals, sports people and actors. They are written in the sort of slang that is typically used by such people. The Broadway musical play Guys and Dolls and its film version were based on Runyon's 1932 collection of stories by that name.
