  1. (1942-1999) a US singer of soul music who wrote songs, played the guitar, and produced records. He was the main singer for the group The Impressions, and their hit songs included Gypsy Woman (1961). After he left the group in 1970, Mayfield wrote the music for the film Superfly (1972) and produced several successful albums, including Honesty (1981). He was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
