- (1846-1911) an American woman who tried to improve society. She is best remembered for her campaign against alcohol during which she often entered bars to destroy bottles and barrels containing alcoholic drink. She was arrested many times, especially in the 1890s. She also destroyed tobacco, foreign food and paintings of naked women. She published a paper called Smasher's Mail.
