  1. (1898-1990) a US businessman who traded with the Soviet Union from 1921 and had influence with Lenin and other Russian leaders. Because of this, he became an informal messenger between the two countries. Hammer was the head of the Occidental Petroleum company and gave money for many good causes. He took doctors to Russia after the Chernobyl disaster.
