  1. Alfred Edward Housman (1859-1936) an English writer of poetry who taught Latin at London and Cambridge universities. His best-known work is A Shropshire Lad, a collection of short poems which have been set to music by at least fifty composers, including George Butterworth, Lennox Berkeley, Samuel Barber and John Ireland.
