- William Joseph Brennan (1906-97) a US Supreme Court judge (1956-90) who was known for his liberal views and for his strong support for personal freedom and the rights of minorities. In 1990 he was responsible for a court decision that stated that the government could not stop people who insulted or destroyed the US flag, because that would limit their freedom.
