'Wild Bill' Hickok

- (1837-76) a famous frontiersman in the American Wild West. His real name was James Butler Hickok. He worked as a marshal (= law officer) in several Kansas towns before joining Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (1872-4). He then moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he was shot in the back and killed while playing cards.
