- a Protestant Church that follows the teachings of Martin Luther (1483-1546). Luther taught the importance of faith and Bible study, and is considered to have started the Reformation. There are many branches of the Lutheran Church in the US. The largest is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
