  1. a war between Britain and Argentina that took place in the Falkland Islands in 1982. The two countries had disagreed about who the islands belonged to since the early 19th century, and when Argentinian armed forces moved there in 1982, Britain declared war. Less than two months later, British forces captured the islands again. Nearly 1 000 soldiers were killed.
