  1. (c. 1536-78) the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was probably involved with her in the murder of her second husband, the Earl of Darnley, in 1567. When they got married three months after the murder, they were forced to leave the country and finally became prisoners until their deaths. Bothwell died in prison in Denmark.
