- a bay on the south-west coast of Cuba, where in 1961 about 1 500 Cuban exiles, supported by the CIA, landed in an attempt to end the rule of Fidel Castro. The attempt failed, causing great embarrassment to the US President John F Kennedy and making Castro's position stronger than ever. see also Cuban missile crisis
