  1. a horse race that takes place at Newmarket in eastern England every year in April or May. Its official name is the 1000 Guineas Stakes. It is a flat race (= one without jumps) for female horses that are three years old, and the course is 1 mile/1.6 kilometres long. It is one of the most important horse races in Britain and was first run in 1814.
