  1. (1912-2002) one of the most successful US golf players in the 1940s and 1950s, also known as 'Slammin' Sam' because he hit the ball so far. He won the PGA Championship three times (1942, 1949 and 1951) and the Masters Tournament three times (1949, 1952 and 1954).
