  1. (1890-1922) a leader in the fight against British rule in Ireland. He fought in the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, joined Sinn Fein and helped to form the Irish Republican Army. After taking part in the creation of the Irish Free State in 1921, he commanded the Irish Free State forces and was head of the state for ten days before being killed by Irishmen who disagreed with him.
