- (1901-94) a US scientist who won the 1954 Nobel Prize for his discoveries about how chemicals join together. He was known for his opposition to the testing of nuclear weapons and for his campaigns to have all such weapons destroyed. For this, he won the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize. He also believed that people should take large amounts of vitamin C to prevent colds and other illnesses.
