  1. (1901-62) a US film actor who is best remembered for his roles in westerns as a strong, silent hero. These included High Noon (1952) for which he received an Oscar. He received another for playing a soldier in Sergeant York (1940). He also had comic roles, as in Mr Deeds Goes to Town (1936). Cooper was given a special Oscar in 1961.
