  1. (1907-97) a US film director who won Oscars for From Here to Eternity (1953) and A Man for All Seasons (1966) but not for his best-known film, High Noon (1952). He was born in Austria and went to Hollywood in 1929. His other films include Oklahoma! (1955), The Nun's Story (1959) and The Day of the Jackal (1973).
