  1. (1921-92) an English comedian who was famous for his exaggerated way of telling jokes and appearing to be shocked when the audience thought he was being funny in a rude way. He is probably best remembered for his performance in Up Pompeii!(1970-71), a television comedy series about the ancient Romans.
