  1. a small country in southern Africa, between South Africa and Mozambique, and formerly called Swaziland. It was under the control of the Boers until the Boer War, when it became a British protectorate (= a country controlled and protected by Britain). It became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1968. Eswatini is ruled by a king who chooses the prime minister and the cabinet. It has many cultural and economic links with South Africa. Its capital city is Mbabane and its official languages are Swazi and English.
