  1. (1925-2013) a US writer of crime novels. His books are known for their fast action, tough characters and realistic language. His many novels include Stick (1983), Freaky Deaky (1988), Rum Punch (1992) and Out of Sight (1997). Several have been made into films, including Get Shorty (1995) with John Travolta.
