- the companion of Sherlock Holmes in the stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. He is the narrator of most of the stories and his simple, pleasant attitude to life and events contrasts with the complicated thought processes of Sherlock Holmes. In the stories, he lives with Holmes at 221B Baker Street.
