  1. (1717-79) an English actor. He changed the way plays were performed in Britain by introducing a more natural style of acting. His versions of Shakespeare's characters made Shakespeare popular again in the 18th century, and made Garrick the most famous actor of the period. He was also a theatre manager, and introduced many improvements to the way plays were shown.
