  1. (1886-1980) an English writer of farces (= comedy plays in which characters are often in embarrassing situations and many ridiculous things happen). His plays were especially popular in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s and are still regularly performed. They were originally known as the 'Aldwych farces' because they were first produced at the Aldwych Theatre in London. They include A Cuckoo in the Nest (1925), Rookery Nook (1926) and Thark (1927).
