  1. (1897-1977) a conservative politician who had a long career, mostly in foreign affairs, and became Prime Minister in 1955 when Winston Churchill retired. The following year the Suez Crisis occurred, and in January 1957 Eden resigned. He was made a knight in 1954 and an earl in 1961.
